Module Five - Logo Design
Art Making/Material Exploration #2: Logo Design
- Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.
- I knew when creating a logo that I wanted to go for a simple, clean and minimalistic design that got the point across without any noise that might distract a potential client or customer from using my company. The principles of art and design were in my head while creating the logo and having the constraints in mind while creating the logo was very helpful. I tried to put myself in the place of a client for a moment, what kind of logo do I see when I think of a reputable company? What kind of logo makes me think twice about using a certain company?
- Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.
- I got out some printer paper, a pencil for sketching and some markers to add color. For the draft I simply used pencil to sketch out different styles of logos. I knew I really want to create a minimalist logo, something maybe with just the name of my company accompanied by a geometric shape or something to accentuate my company's name. I thought maybe a simple cursive logo would be nice, but because my "company" specialized in providing industrial services, a cursive logo would be inappropriate for this. My company's motto is "Moving you Forward" so I figured that an arrow shape would be deemed suitable.
- What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?
- I wouldn't say that there was a single discovery that I found to be the most important. I used to assume that not much thought went into simple logos, but I now know that lots of tedious and important work goes into creating a suitable logo for a company. I learned that certain industries require certain styles of logos to look appropriate and that having a logo that draws attention while also not being too intrusive is key to creating a great logo
- What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
I learned that creating symbols and characters to express meaning goes back thousands of years, this is nothing new in the ago of capitalism. Today, a logo is used as a way of expressing a company or business' identity, character and much more. There is a lot of work and collaboration that goes into creating a logo (especially for large companies). I found the powerpoint to be very informative in explaining the history of symbols, the different styles of logos and the process for creating a logo. The videos were also very informative as well. I learned that a logo should be compatible among all forms, both digital and stationary. Having a logo that can be applied to various applications is important to the success of a logo. From the second video with the Marmite (which apparently is kind of gross), I really learned how much time, expertise and oversight goes into creating new logos and packaging. I found this all to be very interesting and something that I had an idea of before, but really did not know the scale of though that went into it.
