Module 11 Video Response
1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
- The first video I chose The Mystical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present, I chose because Spanish History is so vibrant and has created so many treasured artists. It seemed like an interesting video to watch.
- The second video I chose Expressionism, I chose because I was familiar with the term, but I was unfamiliar with the meaning behind it. I wanted to know more about this art movement, and the works that represent it.
- The first video discussed the treasure artists, who were products of Spain. Some of the world's most celebrated artists hail from this nation. The narrator discussed the history behind several of these artists and their works including; Goya, Picasso, Miro and Salvador Dali. The cultural, political background of Spain and the environment many of these artists lived in (a clash between modern beliefs and the power of the Catholic Church).
- The second video discussed the artistic movement that is Expressionism. The movement originated in Germany (particularly Berlin) and proliferated in the early 20th century. These pieces were created to evoke mood and emotion to audiences. This movement is unique from others in the past, whereas traditional structure of form and color was emphasized, the environment or world of these pieces may be distorted significantly to achieve a desired emotion. The individual experience and subjective perspective is emphasized with Expressionism.
- Although there was no specific chapter in the textbook pertaining to the art of Northern Spain, the artists that were described in the video are also described in great detail within the textbook. I found what the text provided to be informative, and the video provided additional biographical information as well as numerous images of their artworks.
- The Chapter "The Modern World" in the textbook discusses Expressionism in great detail. On page 484 Expressionism is described as "any style where the artist's subjective feelings take precedence over objective observation". The video complimented the information the textbook described with history of artists who followed the movement and a great deal of images and videos that helped me get a better understanding.
- I enjoyed the two videos very much and found them to be informative. The first video discussed the abundance of amazing artists from Spain, and the second discussed the art movement Expressionism. I found that these videos were helpful to my understanding of the topics, and added depth to what I found in the textbook that pertained to these topics.
