Module 9
1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
- I chose the two videos to review; The Power of Art: Caravaggio and Albrecht Durer: Image of a Master, mainly due to the fact that I am unfamiliar with these particular artists and I wanted to know more about them and their art.
- Caravaggio was an influential Italian artist. Many of his paintings conveyed images of realistic life, with dramatic details. Although some may have been banal settings, the emotion portrayed captivated audiences. He wanted viewers to feel like they too were in the setting of the painting. He was commissioned to produce work for several churches in Italy. Caravaggio was a talented artist, but was also known for his erratic sometimes violent character. He met a tragic death in 1610 after appealing for a pardon, not before having to flee Naples following a brawl that led to a death sentence.
- Albrecht Durer was a German Artist, printmaker and a key figure in the German Renaissance and exercised powerful cultural influence. He was talented from an early age, evident by his advanced portraits created at a young age. He left a long legacy through his vast body of paintings, engravings and craft of printmaking.
- Both of these artists were active during the Renaissance, and both left a long legacy.
- I found the films to highly enjoyable, I especially find Caravaggio's work to be remarkable. I had a great time looking at his paintings and experiencing the emotion. Both being Renaissance (Northern Renaissance and the Italian) artists, from different places, it is helpful and gives me a broader understanding of the art during that time period and how it may have varied in Germany and Italy (though they were called Germany and Italy at the time, there was a significant spatial difference that could have created variations in technique)
